Five Common Tree Myths Debunked

Just Because They’re Believed Doesn’t Mean They’re True

Like all living things, trees require the proper living conditions and care to thrive. Be that as it may, there are quite a few myths out there regarding tree health that can negatively affect your trees’ vitality. That’s why we’re here to set the record straight on five of the most common tree myths:

Common Tree Myths

  1. Tree Topping is Okay – Tree topping is a quick way to temporarily cut back unwanted branches, but it also disfigures the overall structure and leads to weak limb growth.
  2. Adding Mulch is Always a Good Idea– While applying mulch to the base of a tree can enhance its health, using too much can disturb soil moisture and aeration levels and cause the tree’s base to rot.
  3. Using Soil Enhancements is Always Okay – A lot of people think using soil enhancements—including chemicals and fertilizers—is always okay. However, they can actually prevent trees from acclimating to surrounding soil and damage root systems.
  4. More Fertilizer is Better – Applying the right amount of fertilizer at the right time can enhance trees’ health, but using too much at unnecessary times overstimulates crown growth and weakens natural growth abilities.
  5. Planting Trees is Easy – Many people think planting a tree consists of simply picking one out, digging a hole and filling it with dirt. However, there are many factors to take into account, including: the size of the property, the type of tree, soil type, surrounding structures and proper aftercare.

If you are unsure about how to properly care for your trees, don’t pay attention to common myths. Contact Fannin Tree Farm instead! We’ll be happy to assist you in any way we can.

It’s definitely been a hot one this summer, but thankfully fall is right around the corner and hopefully holds some much-needed temperature relief. With autumn fast approaching, the perfect time to plant trees is upon us.

Generally speaking, when it comes to trees, spring is the time for new growth, and fall is the ideal time for planting. Why, you may ask? The soil conditions from autumn rain and cooler overall temperatures provide the perfect planting environment, allowing trees’ root systems to adapt to their surroundings as they head into dormancy and before they wake up for spring growth.

So if you’ve been thinking about getting a new tree for your home, why not take advantage of this time to select the perfect one? Click here to check out our expansive tree inventory. As always, we are happy to help you during the selection process in any way we can!

Summer Watering Tips

The days are longer, and temperatures are higher, which means summer is officially here in North Texas. With the hot summer heat, it’s essential for you to keep your trees adequately watered using a slow-soak, deep-watering method, such as Gator Bags, hand watering, soaker hoses, and zoned drip systems.

That being said, Fannin Tree Farm encourages you to use the following temperature-based watering guide this summer:

  • 80 to 90 degrees – water twice a week

  • 90 to 100 degrees – water three times a week

  • 100+ degrees – water as needed

The above watering tips are simply guidelines; there is no one-size-fits-all watering schedule. Be sure to check the soil’s moisture levels before watering. If you have any questions or concerns about summer watering, be sure to contact us at your convenience. We’d be glad to help you in any way we can!

Four Common Tree Mistakes

Be Sure to Steer Clear of These Harmful Tree Mistakes

Getting a new tree is a great way to add beauty and value to your property. But many new tree owners tend to make a few common mistakes. Four of the most common mistakes deal with:

Tree Mistakes

  • INAPPROPRIATE WATERING– Under-watering or overwatering trees is the most common mistake new tree owners make. If you’d like detailed watering guidelines, see our professional pointers here.
  • LACK OF OXYGEN – Applying additional mulch without removing the old mulch or installing plants on top of a tree’s root ball can lead to a lack of oxygen to the root system, which will cause the tree’s health to decline.
  • CHEMICALS– Harsh chemicals—like herbicides, broadleaf weed killers and some fertilizers—can harm or even kill trees. They should be used with extreme caution.
  • MECHANICAL INJURY – Many trees, especially young ones, are damaged by the careless use of lawn mowers and weed trimmers. Be sure to exercise caution when using lawn-care machinery around your trees.

Many new tree owners wonder, “How do I care for my newly planted tree?” When you purchase a tree from Fannin, you will receive instructions explaining the seasonal needs of your tree. If you’re thinking about planting a new tree this summer, browse our inventory of premium trees here!
